We're back with the 3rd Annual Forman Faceoff NHL Trade Deadline Live Blog. The NHL Trade Deadline is my favourite day of the year and since 2009 I have been a huge fan of the TSN TradeCentre show. As I shifted into blogging in 2013, the Trade Deadline became my favourite writing day of the year. Very happy to be back for the NHL Trade Deadline 2017!
8:00 AM - 9:00 AM:
-Up at 7:00 AM for my favourite day of the year! I've had this Trade Deadline tradition since 2009 where I get up early and watch the TSN TradeCentre show from start to finish (8:00am-3:00pm and on) while reporting on all the trades in the NHL.
-Starting the day with a cup of tea!
-This deadline is particularly nervous for me, as my favourite team the Colorado Avalanche are very much sellers and I'm hoping my favourite player Matt Duchene doesn't get traded! He happens to be #1 on the Trade Bait List.
-14 trades in the NHL in the 3 days prior to the deadline, including 7 trades yesterday.
-James Duthie guarantees one major deal today "GUAR-AN-TEE."
-Jay Baruchel segment, talking about his upcoming "Goon 2" film.
-TSN really building up Martin Biron vs. Jennifer Hedger Round 2 with the T-shirt cannon.
-Hour 1 has come and gone and there are no trades yet. Here's a look at Marty Biron from Trade Centre 2016.
9:00 AM - 10:00 AM:
-Trade Breaker's (Bob McKenzie, Gord Miller, Darren Dreger and Pierre Lebrun) say that Ottawa has a trade for Curtiz Lazar on the table, for a 2nd-round pick. Pierre Dorion hesitant to make the move.
-Senators GM Pierre Dorion on the line now, hair all over the place, you can see what the deadline does to GMs. "Our hockey team has played the right way from day 1 this year"
-Dorion believes Alex Burrows has a lot of gas left in the tank.
-"We'd like to trade Brent Wallace for Sarah Orlevsky" - line of the day so far!
-Jay Baruchel joins the boys (James Duthie, Marty Biron, Ray Ferraro and Jeff O'Neill) on the panel to talk about his hometown Montreal Canadiens and Goon 2.
-"Everything's coming up Jay" - love the Simpsons reference from Jay Baruchel.
-Reilly and Jonesy from Letterkenny on TSN now "thanks for having us Duthers." Absolutely priceless (http://www.bardown.com/reilly-and-jonesy-from-letterkenny-go-tarps-off-on-tradecentre-1.684466).
-The boys on the panel calling Duthie "Duthers" now.
-O-Dog says he would take Auston Matthews over any player in the NHL right now, even Connor McDavid.
-"Is anyone actually bringing the burgers in here" - ODog not realizing his mic was still on. It's 9:45 AM and Jeff O'neill is thinking about hamburgers.
-End of the 2nd hour and still no trades, here's a look at the boys from Letterkenny!
10:00 AM - 11:00 AM:
-NEWS OF THE DAY: TSN confirms that Jay and Dan return to the network in September!
-"Happy to welcome them back to TSN! Jay's welcome to come up to my cottage anytime, Dan we're still not sure on" - Bob McKenzie.
-"We get to come home, heck yeah! We're going back to Canada!" - Dan O'Toole.
-"Most babies over the last 15 years in Canada were conceived watching our faces" - Jay Onrait.
-"BOBROVSKY! It's like a tick, I'm so excited!" - Jay Onrait.
-"Can we live with you? Toronto housing prices are too high!" - Jan Onrait.
-My day is made, whatever else happens I will still be happy. Canadians around the country are celebrating Jay and Dan are back!
-Wayne and Darryl from Letterkenny now talking about how trade deadline acquisitions are "good guys": http://www.bardown.com/wayne-and-daryl-from-letterkenny-share-their-thoughts-on-trades-that-have-already-happened-1.684518
-"That's 3 hockey players we decided are good guys" - Wayne.
-TRADE #1: Colorado Avalanche acquire F Brendan Ranford from the Arizona Coyotes for F Joe Whitney
Analysis: Minor-league deal
-First trade of the day at 10:45 AM
-James Duthie "Update: the Harveys burgers are on the way for ODog"
-The "Silver Fox" Brian Burke on talking about the addition of Michael Stone last week. His hair slicked back perfectly, tie undone as always.
-TSN showing Brendan Gallagher being pulled over while talking on the phone to them in an interview. Priceless.
-Hour #3 is up with just 1 minor league deal. Jay and Dan returning might be the biggest news of the day!
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM:
-Bob McKenzie says Jarome Iginla wants one last chance at a Stanley Cup, hopes to be traded today.
-George McPhee, GM of the Vegas Golden Knights, on the line talking about when his team can start looking for players.
-"We will be prepared for the expansion draft" - George McPhee.
-TRADE #2: Washington Capitals acquire D Cody Corbett from the Colorado Avalanche for G Joe Cannata
Analysis: Minor-league deal
-TRADE #3: Florida Panthers acquire F Thomas Vanek from the Detroit Red Wings for D Dylan McIlrath and a 2017 3rd-round pick.
Analysis: The Panthers add a great power-forward in Vanek for their playoff push, he comes cheap too for just a prospect and a 3rd-round pick. He has 38 points in 48 games this season, should make an immediate impact in Florida. The Red Wings also retain half of Vanek's salary in the trade (1-year $2.6 million contract).
-Panthers with the first real move of the day at 11:50AM, adding Thomas Vanek.
-Hour #4 is up and we have 3 moves on the day. Here's everyone's favourite Pierre McGuire talking about the Panthers adding Thomas Vanek.
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM:
-TRADE #4: Montreal Canadiens acquire F Dwight King from the Los Angeles Kings for a 2018 conditional 4th-round pick.
Analysis: Habs make another depth move, adding some size with 6'4 Dwight King.
"They got a half a dozen guys that are my size" - Ray Ferraro "That's not good" - Odog.
-"Dwight King needs to change his name to Dwight Canadien" - Duthers.
-Red Wings GM Hen Holland on the phone, talking about being a seller for the first time ever.
-TRADE #5: Los Angelse Kings acquire F Jarome Iginla from the Colorado Avalanche for a 2018 conditional 4th-round pick.
Analysis: The 39-year old Iginla get's out of the distaster in Colorado and get's a chance to play for a team in a playoff run. Iginla has never won the Stanley Cup before, and will likely retire at season's end, good to see him move to a team that has a chance. The Avalanche will also retain half of Iginla's salary (1-year left at $5.3 million cap hit)
-T.J. Miller, star of Silicon Valley, on TSN now. He's in the upcoming "Goon 2" movie as Chad Bailey. Funny guy.
-Hour #5 is over, and things are starting to pick up with 2 hours left until the deadline. Here's a look at T.J. Miller from his segment.
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM:
-Flyers sign G Michal Neuvirth to a 2-year $5 million extension and F Pierre-Edouard Bellemare to a 2-year $2.8 million extension.
-P.K. Subban press conference on now, talking about his return to Montreal for the 1st time since his trade. The Predators play the Canadiens tomorrow night.
"I felt a little bit uncomfortable, because there wasn't 2-feet of snow on the ground" - P.K. Subban on his return to Montreal.
-Iginla on the line, he's very excited to go to Los Angeles and have a chance at the playoffs, "I believe I can still produce."
-Iginla confirms he's going to "talk to his kids" and pick a new number, as Marian Gaborik wears #12 the number he has always worn in his career.
-ODog defend's his comments for earlier, he wouldn't trade Auston Matthews for any player in the NHL right now.
-"What is wrong with you?" - Ray Ferraro asks Odog if he thinks Matthews is better than Crosby
-"This is the worst segment ever" - ODog.
-TRADE #6: Florida Panthers acquire G Adam Wilcox from the Tampa Bay Lightning for G Mike McKenna.
Analysis: Minor-league deal
-"They weren't loved at Fox Sports 1 like they should have been" - Dan Patrick on Jay and Dan returning to Canada
-TRADE #7: New York Rangers acquire F Taylor Beck from the Edmonton Oilers for F Justin Fontaine
Analysis: Minor-league deal
-1 hour left until the 3:00 PM deadline, however trades usually spill in well after the deadline.
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM:
-TRADE #8: Columbus Blue Jackets acquire D Kyle Quincey from the New Jersey Devils for D Dalton Prout
Analysis: A swap of depth defenseman
-TRADE #9: Montreal Canadiens acquire F Andreas Martinsen from the Colorado Avalanche for F Sven Andrighetto
Analysis: The Canadiens continue to add size to their lineup adding 6'3 Andreas Martinsen from Colorado in exchange for Swiss forward Sven Andrighetto
-Bob McKenzie tweets that Vegas Golden Knights are officially allowed to start completing transactions.
-TRADE #10: Tampa Bay Lightning acquire D Mark Streit from the Philadelphia Flyers for F Valtteri Filppula, 2014 4th-round pick and a conditional 2017 7th-round pick
Analysis: The Lightning add some much-needed offense on their blueline in the 39-year old Streit, who's a pending FA at the end of the season. More importantly they get rid of Valterri Filppula's contract, who has 1 year left at $5 million cap hit. This trade seems to be 2 players in need of a change of scenery.
-TRADE #11: Nashville Predators acquire F P.A. Parenteau from the New Jersey Devils for a 6th-round pick
-Analysis: The Predators add some depth scoring for the playoffs in Parenteau, who has 13 goals in 59 games this season.
-TRADE #12: Calgary Flames acquire F Curtis Lazar and D Mike Kostka from the Ottawa Senators for D Jyrki Jokipakka and a 2nd-round pick.
Analysis: The Senators ship out their 1st-round pick from 2013 in Lazar, someone who had been asking for a trade for most of the season. In return for Lazar and AHL defenseman Mike Kostka, they Senators get Finnish defenseman Jokipakka and a 2nd-round pick. Either way Curtis Lazar getting a fresh start in Calgary will be worth watching.
-Matt Duchene and Gabriel Landeskog WILL NOT be traded by the Colorado Avalanche. Sigh of relief. Phew.
-Deadline has passed! Trades still coming in however.
3:00 PM Deadline and on:
-TRADE #13: Toronto Maple Leafs acquire F Eric Fehr, D Steve Oleksy and a 2017 4th-round pick from the Pittsburgh Penguins for D Frankie Corrado.
Analysis: Penguins dump Fehr's salary to move another move, Leafs bring him on as a depth forward. The teams also swap minor-league defenseman with Corrado heading to Pittsburgh and Oleksy heading to Toronto.
-TRADE #14: Pittsburgh Penguins acquire D Mark Streit from the Tampa Bay Lightning for a 2018 4th-round pick
Analysis: So much for the Lightning needing a boost on their defense, Streit is flipped to the Penguins for a 4th round pick. With injuries to Olli Maata and Trevor Daley, the Penguins add some much-needed depth on defense. Streit should be an excellent fit in Pittsburgh.
-TRADE #15: Boston Bruins acquire F Drew Stafford from the Winnipeg Jets for a conditional 2017 6th-round pick
Analysis: Bruins add a depth forward for the playoff push.
-TRADE #16: Columbus Blue Jackets acquire F Lauri Korpikoski from the Dallas Stars for D Dillon Heatherington
Analysis: Blue Jackets add a depth forward for the playoff push.
-Weird stat of the day: this is the first Trade Deadline since 2013 where Lee Stempniak wasn't traded.
Until 2018 Trade Deadline!
