Winners:
Edmonton Oilers - Ken Holland had a busy day in his first trade deadline in Edmonton, and he spent the day acquiring two of his former Red Wings players in Andreas Athanasiou and Mike Green. Throw in the addition of Tyler Ennis from Ottawa, Holland added 3 strong pieces for the Oilers as they push for the Pacific Division lead heading into the playoffs. Thought that Holland and the Oilers had an excellent day today and setup Connor McDavid and company with a chance at a long playoff run come April.
Carolina Hurricanes - Easily the most aggressive team on deadline day, Don Waddell wasted little time with the first big trade of the day acquiring Vincent Trochek (albeit at a steep price) from Florida in the morning. He followed that up with the additions of both Sami Vatanen and Brady Skjei on the blueline, who will attempt to make up for the absence of Dougie Hamilton, out for the season with a broken leg. Thought that Waddell's aggressive day was perfect for the Hurricanes to keep pace with high-powered teams in the East such as Boston, Tampa Bay, Washington and Pittsburgh.
Ottawa Senators - Pierre Dorion decided well in advance of the deadline that the Senators would be sellers, and he was able to trade Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Vladislav Namestnikov and Tyler Ennis today and in return pick up 5 draft picks (including a 1st-round pick this summer). The Senators have a staggering 13 picks in this summers draft, including a trio of 1st-round picks (2 potential lottery picks with their own 1st-round pick and the Sharks 1st-round pick) and 4 2nd-round picks. In the next two drafts the Senators have: 4 1st-round picks, 7 2nd-round picks and 3 3rd-round picks. For a team that seemed to have no direction for years, the Senators finally are building something exciting in Ottawa.
Losers:
Toronto Maple Leafs - It's been a disastrous 48 hours for the Maple Leafs franchise. First they lose on Saturday night to their own emergency backup goalie, a zamboni driver for the Marlies. Kyle Dubas followed that up with a very underwhelming trade deadline, re-acquiring AHLer CAlle Rosen from the Avs for goalie Michael Hutchinson and another minor-league deal. Not only did Dubas pass on trading Tyson Barrie, who will likely walk for free this summer as a free agent, but Dubas passed on an opportunity to add an impact player for their tight playoff race. Fans in Toronto are at a boiling-over point and they best make the playoffs...
Calgary Flames - Another Canadian team with a very underwhelming deadline day, the Flames add defenseman Erik Gustaffson from Chicago and Derek Forbort from Los Angeles, while sending minor-league defensman Brandon Davidson to San Jose in their lone deals of the day. Flames fans felt the team could use a boost on both offense and defense after last year's first round exit at the hands of the Avalanche, but the team remains largely the same after today. Brad Treliving might have to answer a lot of questions this summer if the Flames miss the playoffs or exit early yet again.
Buffalo Sabres - Probably the most puzzling team of the day, the Sabres sit 8 points out of the 2nd Eastern Conference Wildcard spot and have really had a terrible season, and yet Jason Botterill decided he wanted to be buyers and not sellers at the deadline today. They first acquired struggling veteran Wayne Simmonds from the Devils and followed that up by sending Conor Sheary and Evan Rodrigues to the Penguins for Dominik Kahun. Maybe Botterill believe's his team is capable of going on a run to end the season and squeak into the playoffs, either way definitely an odd day out of Buffalo.
Deadline Day Notes:
-After much speculation on the trade front, Chris Kreider re-signs with the Rangers, 7-year $45.5 million deal ($6.5 million cap hit)
-Jean-Gabriel Pageau re-signs with the Islanders immediately after being dealt there, signing a 6-year $30 million deal ($5 million cap hit)
-Jake Muzzin re-signs with the Maple Leafs, signing a 4-year $22.5 million deal ($5.625 million cap hit)
-Joe Thornton passes on a potential last chance at Lord Stanley to remain in San Jose. Hopefully Jumbo returns next season for 1 more shot
-Nick Holden re-signs with the Golden Knights, signing a 2-year $3.4 million deal ($1.7 million cap hit)
-Zach Parise appeared to be headed to the New York Islanders, the team his father J-P played on from 1974-78, but the deal fell through at the last moment due to contract reasons
-Johnny Gaudreau cased a stir in Calgary this afternoon, exiting the ice during practice leading to an avalanche of speculation on twitter. Gaudreau clarified that he just "had to go pee." Crisis averted in Calgary
-The 32 trades completed today were the most on any single deadline day in NHL history, passing the 31 from 2010

Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: ***
46. Tampa Bay Lightning Acquire: F Barclay Goodrow, 2020 3rd-Round Pick (PHI)
San Jose Sharks Acquire: 2020 1st-Round Pick, F Anthony Greco
Analysis: The Lightning continue to add depth for the playoffs in hopes of avoiding another 1st-round exit, acquiring the 26-year old Goodrow and a 3rd-round pick (from Philadelphia) from the Sharks in exchange for a 1st-round pick this summer and the AHLer Greco

Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: ***
42. Vegas Golden Knights Acquire: G Robin Lehner
Chicago Blackhawks Acquire: G Malcolm Subban, D Slava Demin, 2020 2nd-Round Pick (PIT)
Analysis: This one is a head-scratcher to me. I figured Lehner would be on the move to a team that needed a goalie, someone like Carolina or Colorado, but he ends up going to Vegas to join Marc-Andre Fleury in the crease. In return the Blackhawks are getting 26-year old goaltender Malcolm Subban, a defensive prospect in Demin and a 2nd-round pick this summer
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: ***
41. Carolina Hurricanes Acquire: D Sami Vatanen
New Jersey Devils Acquire: 2020 Conditional 4th-Round Pick, D Frederik Claesson, F Janne Kuokkanen
Analysis: Following the loss of all-star defenseman Dougie Hamilton for the season due to a broken leg, the Hurricanes add a rental in the 28-year old Vatanen hoping for some offensive spark from the blueline. In return the Devils are getting a conditional 4th-round pick (becomes a 3rd) this summer and two AHLers in Claesson and Kuokkanen
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: ****
40. Florida Panthers Acquire: D Emil Djuse
Dallas Stars Acquire: 2020 6th-Round Pick (from BUF)
Analysis: Minor-league deal
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: *
39. Pittsburgh Penguins Acquire: F Evan Rodrigues, F Conor Sheary
Buffalo Sabres Acquire: F Dominik Kahun
Analysis: Another interesting trade involving the Buffalo Sabres. The Penguins re-acquire the 27-year old Sheary after dealing him to Buffalo two summers ago and add the 26-year old Rodrigues, who had recently asked out of Bufflo, and in return send the 24-year old Kahun to the Sabres
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: ***
38. Calgary Flames Acquire: D Derek Forbort
Los Angeles Kings Acquire: 2020 4th-Round Pick
Analysis: The Flames add some depth to their defense in the 27-year old Forbort, with the Kings getting a 4th-round pick this summer in return
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: ***
37. Edmonton Oilers Acquire: F Tyler Ennis
Ottawa Senators Acquire: 2021 5th-Round Pick
Analysis: Ken Holland continues his aggressive deadline day with the addition of the 30-year old veteran Ennis, who will add some nice depth to the Oilers botto six. In return the Senators acquire a 5th-round pick in 2021
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: ***
36. Edmonton Oilers Acquire: F Andreas Athanasiou, F Ryan Kuffner
Detroit Red Wings Acquire: F Sam Gagner, 2020 2nd-Round Pick, 2021 2nd-Round Pick
Analysis: The Oilers acquire speedy winger Andreas Athanasiou from the Red Wings, who will get a fresh start after just 10 goals/24 points in 46 games and being a miserable -45 this season, worst in the NHL. The 25-year old winger could potentially play with McDavid and/or Draisaitl and it will be a big boost for him, and in return the Red Wings continue their rebuild adding two second-round picks and also veteran forward Sam Gagner
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: ****
35. Montreal Canadiens Acquire: F Aaron Luchuk, 2020 7th-Round Pick
Ottawa Senators Acquire: F Matthew Peca
Analysis: Minor-league deal
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: *
34. Boston Bruins Acquire: F Nick Ritchie
Anaheim Ducks Acquire: F Danton Heinen
Analysis: A swap of 24-year old forwards, the Bruins add the 6'2 230-pound Ritchie and in return send the 6'1 190-pound Heinen to the Ducks
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: ***
33. Buffalo Sabres Acquire: Wayne Simmonds
New Jersey Devils Acquire: 2021 Conditional 5th-Round Pick
Analysis: The Sabres sit 8 points out of the playoffs in the East and yet acquire the 31-year old Simmonds, who's having a tough year with just 8 goals/24 points in 61 games before the trade. The Devils will retain half of Simmonds $5 million salary, while the 5th-round pick becomes a 4th-round pick if the Sabres make the playoffs and Simmonds plays 10 games in the process
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: ***
32. Philadelphia Flyers Acquire: F Derek Grant
Anaheim Ducks Acquire: F Kyle Criscuolo, 2020 4th-Round Pick
Analysis: The Flyers add a depth forward for the playoffs in the 29-year old Grant, having a career-year with 14 goals/20 points in 49 games before the trade. The Ducks in return get a 4th-round pick and the AHLer Criscuolo
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: ***
31. Colorado Avalanche Acquire: G Michael Hutchinson
Toronto Maple Leafs Acquire: D Calle Rosen
Analysis: This trade is a weird one to me. The Leafs re-acquire Rosen after sending him to Colorado this summer in the Kadri/Barrie trade, and the Avs get a depth goalie in return in Hutchinson with Philipp Grubauer injured. Hutchinson has been one of the worst goalies in the NHL this season so this trade is interesting to say the least...
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: ***
30. Pittsburgh Penguins Acquire: F Patrick Marleau
San Jose Sharks Acquire: 2020 Conditional 3rd-Round Pick
Analysis: 40-year old Patrick Marleau get's possibly his last chance at Lord Stanley, heading to join Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins for a 3rd-round pick. Marleau could very well retire this summer and gets a golden chance in Pittsburgh. The 3rd-round pick becomes a 2nd round pick if the Penguins win the Stanley Cup
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: **
29. Philadelphia Flyers Acquire: F Nate Thompson
Montreal Canadiens Acquire: 2020 5th-Round Pick
Analysis: The Flyers add a depth piece for the playoff run in 35-year old Thompson
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: **
28. Carolina Hurricanes Acquire: F Vincent Trocheck
Florida Panthers Acquire: F Erik Haula, F Lucas Wallmark, F Eetu Luostarinen, D Chase Priskie
Analysis: Three trades by 10:15am! This is by far the biggest of the day so far, the Hurricanes acquire the former 75-point scorer Trocheck but do so at a hefty price, sending a package of four players centered around 28-year old Erik Haula and 23-year old Lucas Wallmark. Trocheck still has 2 years remaining at $4.75 million so this is more then a rental for the Hurricanes, despite just 36 points this season the Hurricanes will bank on him finding his legs again in Carolina. An interesting trade for two teams in the Eastern Conference wildcard race...
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: *****
27. New York Islanders Acquire: Jean-Gabriel Pageau
Ottawa Senators Acquire: 2020 Conditional 1st-Round Pick, 2020 2nd-Round Pick, 2022 Conditional 3rd-Round Pick
Analysis: Lou Lamiorello with the first major trade of the day acquiring the 27-year old Pageau, who's having a career-year with 24 goals/40 points in 60 games before the trade. The Senators continue to clean house and rebuild, stocking up a 1st, 2nd and 3rd in return for the fan-favourite Pageau, who's a free agent this summer as well. The conditions on the picks are as follows: if the Islanders finish bottom 3 this year, the 1st in 2020 shifts to 2021, and the 3rd round pick only goes to Ottawa if the Islanders win the Stanley Cup
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: ****
26. Colorado Avalanche Acquire: F Vladislav Namestnikov
Ottawa Senators Acquire: 2021 4th-Round Pick
Analysis: With injuries to several key guys including forwards Mikko Rantanen and Nazem Kadri, Joe Sakic starts off deadline day (9:40 AM) by acquiring the 27-year old Namestnikov for a 4th-round pick, who funnily enough was acquired by the Sens earlier this year for a 4th round pick
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: ***
25. Edmonton Oilers Acquire: D Mike Green
Detroit Red Wings Acquire: F Kyle Brodziak, Conditional 2020 4th-Round Pick
Analysis: The Oilers add a veteran presence on their blueline in 34-year old Mike Green, a guy who's best years are behind him but should still be able to contribute for the Oilers. In return the Red Wings get Brodziak's expiring contract and a 4th round pick (which becomes a 3rd round pick if the Oilers win 2 playoff rounds and he plays half the games), while also retaining half of Green's contract. This technically becomes the 1st move of he trade deadline as it happened after midnight
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: **
24. Washington Capitals Acquire: F Ilya Kovalchuk
Montreal Canadiens Acquire: 2020 3rd-Round Pick
Analysis: On the eve of the trade deadline, Ilya Kovalchuk finds himself on the way to the Washington Capitals to join fellow countrymen Alex Ovechkin. After signing Kovalchuk last month for $700,000, Bergevin smartly flips him for a 3rd round pick and can potentially bring the fan-favourite Kovalchuk back this summer when he's a free agent
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: ***
23. Toronto Maple Leafs Acquire: F Miikka Salomaki
Nashville Predators Acquire: D Ben Harpur
Analysis: Minor-league deal
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: *

Analysis: The Winnipeg, Manitoba native Eakin heads to his hometown team and in return the Knights add a conditional 4th round pick (becomes a 3rd if the Jets make the playoffs or Eakin resigns in Winnipeg)
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: ***
21. Boston Bruins Acquire: F Ondrej Kase
Anaheim Ducks Acquire: F David Backes, D Axel Andersson, 2020 1st-Round Pick
Analysis: The Bruins look to add some scoring depth heading into the playoffs with the addition of the 24-year old Kase, who has shown glimpses of being an impact player when he can remain healthy. With the Ducks heading for a lottery pick they add a 1st round pick this summer and prospect in Andersson, all while absorbing the contract of Backes ($6 million) who comes off the books this summer. Unloading Backes also leaves room for a potential 2nd deal for Boston before the deadline
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: ****
20. Florida Panthers Acquire: F Danick Martel
Tampa Bay Lightning Acquire: F Anthony Greco
Analysis: Minor-league deal
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: *
19. Montreal Canadiens Acquire: F Jake Lucchini, F Joseph Blandisi
Pittsburgh Penguins Acquire: F Phil Varone, F Riley Barber
Analysis: Minor-league deal
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: *
18. New York Rangers Acquire: G Jean-Francois Berube
Philadelphia Flyers Acquire: Future considerations
Analysis: Minor-league deal
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: *

Analysis: Minor-league deal
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: *
16. Vegas Golden Knights Acquire: D Alec Martinez
Los Angeles Kings Acquire: 2020 2nd-Round Pick, 2021 2nd-Round Pick
Analysis: The Kings continue their fire sale shipping out 2014 Stanley Cup hero Alec Martinez to Vegas for a pair of 2nd round picks. The Golden Knights desperately add another reliable defenseman to their back-end and the Kings continue to add picks for the future.
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: ***
15. Toronto Maple Leafs Acquire: F Denis Malgin
Florida Panthers Acquire: F Mason Marchment
Analysis: Minor-league deal
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: *
14. St. Louis Blues Acquire: D Marco Scandella
Montreal Canadiens Acquire: 2020 2nd-Round Pick, 2021 Conditional 4th-Round Pick
Analysis: After acquiring Scandella the previous month for a 4th round pick, Bergevin flips him to the defending champion Blues for a 2nd-round pick this summer and a conditional 4th-round pick in 2021 (if St. Louis wins 2 playoff rounds and Scandella playoffs half the games, or if he resigns in St. Louis)
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: ***
13. Washington Capitals Acquire: D Brenden Dillon
San Jose Sharks Acquire: 2020 2nd-Round Pick, 2021 Conditional 3rd-Round Pick
Analysis: Facing their first postseason absence since 2015 (and 2nd since 2003), the Sharks start their retooling by shipping the 29-year old blueliner Dillon to the Capitals, who in return send a pair of draft picks. The Caps strengthen their blueline with the addition of Dillon and hope to avoid last year's first-round collapse
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: ***
12. Winnipeg Jets Acquire: D Dylan Demelo
Ottawa Senators Acquire: 2020 3rd-Round Pick
Analysis: With some big gaps in their defense after losing Dustin Byfuglien, Tyler Myers and Jacob Trouba last summer, the Jets add to their right side with the addition of the 26-year old Demelo, who in return send a 3rd-round pick this summer to the Sens
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: ***
11. New York Rangers Acquire: F Julien Gauthier
Carolina Hurricanes Acquire: D Joey Kean
Analysis: Minor-league deal
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: *
10. Vancouver Canucks Acquire: F Tyler Toffoli
Los Angeles Kings Acquire: F Tim Schaller, F Tyler Madden, 2020 2nd-Round Pick, 2022 Conditional 4th-Round Pick
Analysis: Just 2 days after his hat trick performance in the Stadium Series game, the first hat trick in NHL outdoor game history, Toffoli finds himself heading to Vancouver after spending the first 8 years of his career in Los Angeles. In return the Kings add a depth forward in Schaller, prospect in Madden, 2nd round pick this summer and a conditional 4th-round pick in 2022 in Toffoli resigns in Vancouver this summer. Remains to be seen how Toffoli does in Vancouver but this is a big price to pay for a potential rental
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: ****
9. Tampa Bay Lightning Acquire: F Blake Coleman
New Jersey Devils Acquire: F Nolan Foote, 2021 1st-Round Pick (VAN)
Analysis: Looking to avoid last year's playoff disaster, the Lightning added some size and goal scoring upfront in the 28-year old Coleman, having a career-year with 21 goals in 57 games with the Devils. They do so at a fairly significant cost, with the Devils adding the promising forward prospect Foote and a 1st round pick (acquired from Vancouver in the JT Miller trade). Coleman has a year remaining on his deal at $1.8 million, so despite the hefty cost it's not completely a rental trade. Remains to be seen how this trade plays out for both teams
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: ****
8. New York Islanders Acquire: D Andy Greene
New Jersey Devils Acquire: D David Quenneville, 2021 2nd-Round Pick
Analysis: This trade has Lou Lamiorello written all over it! The Islanders GM trades for his former Captain from New Jersey in the 37-year old Greene to help solidify the Islanders defense for the playoffs. In return the Devils get prospect David Quenneville and a 2nd round pick, a solid return for an aging defenseman on a rebuilding team
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: **
7. Pittsburgh Penguins Acquire: F Jason Zucker
Minnesota Wild Acquire: F Alex Galchenyuk, D Calen Addison, 2020 Conditional 1st-Round Pick
Analysis: Two weeks before the trade deadline the Penguins and Wild with a fairly significant trade, with the 28-year old winger Jason Zucker heading to the Penguins. In return the Wild add the 26-year old Galchenyuk, the once 3rd overall pick playing for his 4th team in two years, plus promising prospect Calen Addison and a conditional 1st round pick in 2020 (unless the Penguins miss the playoffs it becomes 2021). Zucker seems to be a perfect fit for Sidney Crosby's wing and has 3 years left at $5.5 million, while the Wild add a significant package for the future
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: ****
6. Toronto Maple Leafs Acquire: G Jack Campbell, F Kyle Clifford
Los Angeles Kings Acquire: F Trevor Moore, 2020 3rd-Round Pick, 2021 Conditional 3rd-Round Pick
Analysis: The Leafs finally get their coveted backup goalie in Jack Campbell and add some sandpaper and grit in Kyle Clifford, a member of both Kings 2012 and 2014 Stanley Cup wins. The Kings add the 24-year old Moore and a pair of 3rd round picks as they continue their rebuild. This is a win-win trade for both teams
Forman Faceoff Trade Rating: ****
